To the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness, because we have rebelled against him and have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God by following his laws which he set before us.

When I was in trouble, I called to the LORD; *
I
called to the LORD, and he answered me.
Deliver me, O LORD, from lying lips *
and from the
deceitful tongue.
What shall be done to you, and what more besides, *
O
you deceitful tongue?
The sharpened arrows of a warrior, *
along with hot
glowing coals.
How hateful it is that I must lodge in Meshech *
and
dwell among the tents of Kedar!
Too long have I had to live *
among the enemies of
peace.
I am on the side of peace, *
but when I speak of it,
they are for war.
I lift up my eyes to the hills; *
from where is my
help to come?
My help comes from the LORD, *
the maker of heaven
and earth.
He will not let your foot be moved *
and he who
watches over you will not fall asleep.
Behold, he who keeps watch over Israel *
shall
neither slumber nor sleep;
The LORD himself watches over you; *
the LORD is your
shade at your right hand,
So that the sun shall not strike you by day, *
nor
the moon by night.
The LORD shall preserve you from all evil; *
it is he
who shall keep you safe.
The LORD shall watch over your going out and your coming
in, *
from this time forth for evermore.
I was glad when they said to me, *
“Let us go
to the house of the LORD.”
Now our feet are standing *
within your gates, O
Jerusalem.
Jerusalem is built as a city *
that is at unity with
itself;
To which the tribes go up,
the tribes of the LORD,
*
the assembly of Israel,
to praise the Name of the LORD.
For there are the thrones of judgment, *
the thrones
of the house of David.
Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: *
“May they
prosper who love you.
Peace be within your walls *
and quietness within
your towers.
For my brethren and companions’ sake, *
I pray
for your prosperity.
Because of the house of the LORD our God, *
I will
seek to do you good.”
To you I lift up my eyes, *
to you enthroned in the
heavens.
As the eyes of servants look to the hand of their
masters, *
and the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress,
So our eyes look to the LORD our God, *
until he show
us his mercy.
Have mercy upon us, O LORD, have mercy, *
for we have
had more than enough of contempt,
Too much of the scorn of the indolent rich, *
and of
the derision of the proud.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah.
Therefore thus says the LORD of hosts: Because you have not obeyed my words, I am going to send for all the tribes of the north, says the LORD, even for King Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon, my servant, and I will bring them against this land and its inhabitants, and against all these nations around; I will utterly destroy them, and make them an object of horror and of hissing, and an everlasting disgrace. And I will banish from them the sound of mirth and the sound of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the sound of the millstones and the light of the lamp. This whole land shall become a ruin and a waste, and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years. Then after seventy years are completed, I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation, the land of the Chaldeans, for their iniquity, says the LORD, making the land an everlasting waste. I will bring upon that land all the words that I have uttered against it, everything written in this book, which Jeremiah prophesied against all the nations. For many nations and great kings shall make slaves of them also; and I will repay them according to their deeds and the work of their hands.
For thus the LORD, the God of Israel, said to me: Take from my hand this cup of the wine of wrath, and make all the nations to whom I send you drink it. They shall drink and stagger and go out of their minds because of the sword that I am sending among them. So I took the cup from the Lord’s hand, and made all the nations to whom the LORD sent me drink it:

A Reading from the Letter to the Romans.
Brothers and sisters, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. I can testify that they have a zeal for God, but it is not enlightened. For, being ignorant of the righteousness that comes from God, and seeking to establish their own, they have not submitted to God’s righteousness. For Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes. Moses writes concerning the righteousness that comes from the law, that “the person who does these things will live by them.” But the righteousness that comes from faith says, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’” (that is, to bring Christ down) “or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say? “The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. The scripture says, “No one who believes in him will be put to shame.”
For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him. For, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Splendor and honor and kingly power *
are yours by
right, O Lord our God,
For you created everything that is, *
and by your
will they were created and have their being;
And yours by right, O Lamb that was slain, *
for with
your blood you have redeemed for God,
From every family, language, people, and nation, *

kingdom of priests to serve our God.
And so, to him who sits upon the throne, *
and to
Christ the Lamb,
Be worship and praise, dominion and splendor, *
for
ever and for evermore.
I believe in God, the Father
almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus
Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of
the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered
under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.

descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.

He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

believe in the Holy Spirit,

Almighty God, you alone can bring into order the unruly wills and affections of sinners: Grant your people grace to love what you command and desire what you promise; that, among the swift and varied changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
Almighty and everlasting God, you hate nothing you have made and forgive the sins of all who are penitent: Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of you, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
O God, the author of peace and lover of concord, to know you is eternal life and to serve you is perfect freedom: Defend us, your humble servants, in all assaults of our enemies; that we, surely trusting in your defense, may not fear the power of any adversaries; through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Lord Jesus Christ, you stretched out your arms of love on the hard wood of the cross that everyone might come within the reach of your saving embrace: So clothe us in your Spirit that we, reaching forth our hands in love, may bring those who do not know you to the knowledge and love of you; for the honor of your Name. Amen.
Let us pray now for our own needs and those of others.
Almighty God, Father of
all mercies,
we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks
for
all your goodness and loving-kindness
to us and to all whom you
have made.
We bless you for our creation, preservation,
and all
the blessings of this life;
but above all for your immeasurable
love
in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ;
for
the means of grace, and for the hope of glory.
And, we pray, give us such
an awareness of your mercies,
that with truly thankful hearts we
may show forth your praise,
not only with our lips, but in our
lives,
by giving up our selves to your service,
and by walking
before you
in holiness and righteousness all our days;
through
Jesus Christ our Lord,
to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit,
be
honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen.
