Sunday –
Proper 12 in Year 1
Morning Prayer
I was glad when they said to me, "Let us go to the house of the Lord." Psalm 122:1
Lord, open our lips.
And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.
Glory to the
Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the
beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia.
Come let us sing
to the Lord; *
let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come
before his presence with thanksgiving *
and raise a loud shout to
him with psalms.
For the Lord is a
great God, *
and a great King above all gods.
In his hand are
the caverns of the earth, *
and the heights of the hills are his
also.
The sea is his,
for he made it, *
and his hands have molded the dry land.
Come, let us bow
down, and bend the knee, *
and kneel before the Lord our Maker.
For he is our
God,
and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his
hand. *
Oh, that today you would hearken to his voice!
Glory
be to the Father and to the Son,
And to the Holy Spirit.
As it
was in the beginning, is now,
And will be forever. Amen.
Psalm 24
1The earth is the LORD'S and all that is in it,*
the
world and all who dwell therein.
2For it is he who
founded it upon the seas *
and made it firm upon the rivers of the
deep.
3"Who can ascend the hill of the LORD? *
and
who can stand in his holy place?"
4"Those who
have clean hands and a pure heart,*
who have not pledged
themselves to falsehood,
nor sworn by what is a fraud.
5They
shall receive a blessing from the LORD *
and a just reward from
the God of their salvation."
6Such is the
generation of those who seek him,*
of those who seek your face, O
God of Jacob.
7Lift up your heads, O gates;
lift
them high, O everlasting doors;*
and the King of glory shall come
in.
8"Who is this King of glory?"*
"The
LORD, strong and mighty,
the LORD, mighty in battle."
9Lift
up your heads, O gates;
lift them high, O everlasting doors;*
and
the King of glory shall come in.
10"Who is he,
this King of glory?" *
"The LORD of hosts,
he is the
King of glory."
Psalm 29
1Ascribe to the LORD, you gods,*
ascribe to the LORD
glory and strength.
2Ascribe to the LORD the glory due
his Name; *
worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.
3The
voice of the LORD is upon the waters;
the God of glory
thunders;*
the LORD is upon the mighty waters.
4The
voice of the LORD is a powerful voice; *
the voice of the LORD is
a voice of splendor.
5The voice of the LORD breaks the
cedar trees; *
the LORD breaks the cedars of Lebanon;
6He
makes Lebanon skip like a calf,*
and Mount Hermon like a young
wild ox.
7The voice of the LORD splits the flames of
fire;
the voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness;*
the LORD
shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
8The voice of the LORD
makes the oak trees writhe *
and strips the forests bare.
9And
in the temple of the LORD *
all are crying, "Glory!"
10The
LORD sits enthroned above the flood; *
the LORD sits enthroned as
King for evermore.
11The LORD shall give strength to
his people; *
the LORD shall give his people the blessing of
peace.
Glory to the
Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit
as it was in the
beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
2 Samuel 1:17-27
David intoned this lamentation over Saul and his son Jonathan. (He
ordered that The Song of the Bow*
be taught to the people of Judah; it is written in the Book of
Jashar.) He said:
Your glory, O Israel, lies slain upon your
high places!
How the mighty have fallen!
Tell
it not in Gath,
proclaim it not in the streets
of Ashkelon;
or the daughters of the Philistines will
rejoice,
the daughters of the uncircumcised will
exult.
You mountains of Gilboa,
let there be no
dew or rain upon you,
nor bounteous fields!*
For
there the shield of the mighty was defiled,
the
shield of Saul, anointed with oil no more.
From the blood of the slain,
from the fat
of the mighty,
the bow of Jonathan did not turn back,
nor
the sword of Saul return empty.
Saul and Jonathan, beloved and lovely!
In
life and in death they were not divided;
they were swifter than
eagles,
they were stronger than lions.
O daughters of Israel, weep over Saul,
who
clothed you with crimson, in luxury,
who put
ornaments of gold on your apparel.
How the mighty have fallen
in the midst
of the battle!
Jonathan lies slain upon your high places.
I
am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan;
greatly beloved were
you to me;
your love to me was
wonderful,
passing the love of women.
How the mighty have fallen,
and the
weapons of war perished!
The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Canticle 16
Blessed be the
Lord, the God of Israel;*
he has come to his people and set them
free.
He has raised up
for us a mighty savior,*
born of the house of his servant
David.
Through his holy prophets he promised of old,
that he would
save us from our enemies,*
from the hands of all who hate us.
he promised to
show mercy to our fathers*
and to remember his holy covenant.
This was the oath
he swore to our father Abraham,*
to set us free from the hands of
our enemies,
Free to worship
him without fear,*
holy and righteous in his sight
all the days
of our life.
You, my child,
shall be called the prophet of the Most High,*
for you will go
before the Lord to prepare his way,
To give his
people knowledge of salvation*
by the forgiveness of their sins.
In the tender
compassion of our God*
the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
To
shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death,*
and
to guide our feet into the way of peace.
Glory to the Father,
and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
Reading
Romans 12:9-21
Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honour. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord.* Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers.
Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly;* do not claim to be wiser than you are. Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave room for the wrath of God;* for it is written, ‘Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.’ No, ‘if your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink; for by doing this you will heap burning coals on their heads.’ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Canticle 21
You are God: we
praise you;
You are the Lord; we acclaim you;
You are the
eternal Father:
All creation worships you.
To you all angels,
all the powers of heaven,
Cherubim and Seraphim, sing in endless
praise:
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven
and earth are full of your glory.
The glorious company of apostles
praise you.
The noble fellowship of prophets praise you.
The
white-robed army of martyrs praise you.
Throughout the world the
holy Church acclaims you;
Father, of majesty unbounded,
your
true and only Son, worthy of all worship,
and the Holy Spirit,
advocate and guide.
You, Christ, are the king of glory,
the
eternal Son of the Father.
When you became man to set us free
you
did not shun the Virgin's womb.
You overcame the sting of
death
and opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers.
You
are seated at God's right hand in glory.
We believe that you will
come and be our judge.
Come then, Lord, and help your
people,
bought with the price of your own blood,
and bring us
with your saints
to glory everlasting.
Glory
to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit*
as it was
in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
I believe in God,
the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in
Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the
power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was
buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose
again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right
hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the
dead.
I believe in the
Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of
saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the
body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
The
Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Let us pray.
Our Father in
heaven,
hallowed be your Name,
your kingdom come,
your will
be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our
daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those
who sin
against us.
Save us from the
time of trial,
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom,
the power,
and the glory are yours,
now and for ever. Amen.
Show us your mercy, O Lord;
And grant us your salvation.
Clothe your ministers with righteousness;
Let your people sing with joy.
Give peace, O Lord, in all the world;
For only in you can we live in safety.
Lord, keep this nation under your care;
And guide us in the way of justice and truth.
Let your way be known upon earth;
Your saving health among all nations.
Let not the needy, O Lord, be forgotten;
Nor the hope of the poor be taken away.
Create in us clean hearts, O God;
And sustain us with your Holy Spirit.
Collect of the Day: Proper 12
O God, the protector of all who trust in you, without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy: Increase and multiply upon us your mercy; that, with you as our ruler and guide, we may so pass through things temporal, that we lose not the things eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
A Collect for Sundays
O God, the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: Do not leave us comfortless, but send us your Holy Spirit to strengthen us, and exalt us to that place where our Savior Christ has gone before; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.
For Mission
Almighty and everlasting God, by whose Spirit the whole body of your faithful people is governed and sanctified: Receive our supplications and prayers which we offer before you for all members of your holy Church, that in their vocation and ministry they may truly and devoutly serve you; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.
Let us pray now for our own needs and those of others.
General Thanksgiving
Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen.
Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
May the God of
hope fill us with all joy and peace in believing through the power of
the Holy Spirit. Amen.
