O gracious light,
pure brightness of the everliving
Father in heaven,
O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!
Now as
we come to the setting of the sun,
and our eyes behold the vesper
light,
we sing your praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy
Spirit.
You are worthy at all times to be praised by happy
voices,
O Son of God, O Giver of Life,
and to be glorified
through all the worlds.
The heavens declare the glory of God, *
and the
firmament shows his handiwork.
One day tells its tale to another, *
and one night
imparts knowledge to another.
Although they have no words or language, *
and their
voices are not heard,
Their sound has gone out into all lands, *
and their
message to the ends of the world.
In the deep has he set a pavilion for the sun; *
it
comes forth like a bridegroom out of his chamber;
it rejoices
like a champion to run its course.
It goes forth from the uttermost edge of the heavens
and
runs about to the end of it again; *
nothing is hidden from its
burning heat.
The law of the LORD is perfect and revives the soul;
*
the testimony of the LORD is sure and gives wisdom to the
innocent.
The statutes of the LORD are just and rejoice the heart;
*
the commandment of the LORD is clear and gives light to the
eyes.
The fear of the LORD is clean and endures for ever;
*
the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.
More to be desired are they than gold, more than much
fine gold, *
sweeter far than honey, than honey in the comb.
By them also is your servant enlightened, *
and in
keeping them there is great reward.
Who can tell how often he offends? *
cleanse me from
my secret faults.
Above all, keep your servant from presumptuous sins;
let
them not get dominion over me; *
then shall I be whole and sound,
and innocent of a great offense.
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
be acceptable in your sight, *
O LORD, my strength and my
redeemer.
Hallelujah!
Praise the LORD, O my soul! *
I will
praise the LORD as long as I live;
I will sing praises to my God
while I have my being.
Put not your trust in rulers, nor in any child of earth,
*
for there is no help in them.
When they breathe their last, they return to earth,
*
and in that day their thoughts perish.
Happy are they who have the God of Jacob for their help!
*
whose hope is in the LORD their God;
Who made heaven and earth, the seas, and all that is in
them; *
who keeps his promise for ever;
Who gives justice to those who are oppressed, *
and
food to those who hunger.
The LORD sets the prisoners free;
the LORD opens the
eyes of the blind; *
the LORD lifts up those who are bowed down;
The LORD loves the righteous;
the LORD cares for the
stranger; *
he sustains the orphan and widow,
but frustrates
the way of the wicked.
The LORD shall reign for ever, *
your God, O Zion,
throughout all generations.

A Reading from the Book of Job.
Job again took up his discourse and said: “Oh, that I were as in the months of old, as in the days when God watched over me; when his lamp shone over my head, and by his light I walked through darkness; when I was in my prime, when the friendship of God was upon my tent; when the Almighty was still with me, when my children were around me; when my steps were washed with milk, and the rock poured out for me streams of oil!
When I went out to the gate of the city, when I took my seat in the square, the young men saw me and withdrew, and the aged rose up and stood; the nobles refrained from talking, and laid their hands on their mouths; the voices of princes were hushed, and their tongues stuck to the roof of their mouths. When the ear heard, it commended me, and when the eye saw, it approved; because I delivered the poor who cried, and the orphan who had no helper. The blessing of the wretched came upon me, and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy. I put on righteousness, and it clothed me; my justice was like a robe and a turban. I was eyes to the blind, and feet to the lame. I was a father to the needy, and I championed the cause of the stranger.

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my
spirit rejoices in God my Savior; *
for he has looked with favor
on his lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his
Name.
He has mercy on those who fear him *
in every
generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm, *
he has
scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, *
and
has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things, *
and the
rich he has sent away empty.
He has come to the help of his servant Israel, *
for
he has remembered his promise of mercy,
The promise he made to our fathers, *
to Abraham and
his children for ever.

A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles.
When he had come to Jerusalem, he attempted to join the disciples; and they were all afraid of him, for they did not believe that he was a disciple. But Barnabas took him, brought him to the apostles, and described for them how on the road he had seen the Lord, who had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had spoken boldly in the name of Jesus. So he went in and out among them in Jerusalem, speaking boldly in the name of the Lord. He spoke and argued with the Hellenists; but they were attempting to kill him. When the believers learned of it, they brought him down to Caesarea and sent him off to Tarsus. Meanwhile the church throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had peace and was built up. Living in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it increased in numbers.

Lord, you now have set your servant free *
to go in
peace as you have promised;
For these eyes of mine have seen the Savior, *
whom
you have prepared for all the world to see:
A Light to enlighten the nations, *
and the glory of
your people Israel.

I believe in God, the Father
almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus
Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of

He suffered
under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He
descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He
ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the
Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

believe in the Holy Spirit,

the
communion of saints,

Grant, O God, that we may follow the example of your faithful servant Barnabas, who, seeking not his own renown but the well-being of your Church, gave generously of his life and substance for the relief of the poor and the spread of the Gospel; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Lord Jesus, stay with us, for evening is at hand and the day is past; be our companion in the way, kindle our hearts, and awaken hope, that we may know you as you are revealed in Scripture and the breaking of bread. Grant this for the sake of your love. Amen.
O God and Father of all, whom the whole heavens adore: Let the whole earth also worship you, all nations obey you, all tongues confess and bless you, and men and women everywhere love you and serve you in peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Let us pray now for our own needs and those of others.
Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen.
