Year 1 Proper 26
Morning Prayer
I was glad when they said to me, "Let us go to the house of the Lord." Psalm 122:1
Lord, open our lips.
And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.
Glory to the
Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the
beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia.
Come let us sing
to the Lord;*
let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come
before his presence with thanksgiving*
and raise a loud shout to
him with psalms.
For the Lord is a
great God,*
and a great King above all gods.
In his hand are
the caverns of the earth,*
and the heights of the hills are his
also.
The sea is his,
for he made it,*
and his hands have molded the dry land.
Come, let us bow
down, and bend the knee,*
and kneel before the Lord our Maker.
For he is our
God,
and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his
hand.*
Oh, that today you would hearken to his voice!
61
1 Hear my cry, O God, *
and listen
to my prayer.
2 I call upon you from the ends of the
earth
with heaviness in my heart; *
set me upon the rock that
is higher than I.
3 For you have been my refuge, *
a strong
tower against the enemy.
4 I will dwell in your house for
ever; *
I will take refuge under the cover of your wings.
5
For you, O God, have heard my vows; *
you have granted me the
heritage of those who fear your Name.
6 Add length of days to
the king's life; *
let his years extend over many generations.
7 Let him sit
enthroned before God for ever; *
bid love and faithfulness watch
over him.
8 So will I always sing the praise of your Name,
*
and day by day I will fulfill my vows.
62
1
For God alone my soul in silence waits; *
from him comes my
salvation.
2 He alone is my rock and my salvation, *
my
stronghold, so that I shall not be greatly shaken.
3 How long
will you assail me to crush me,
all of you together, *
as if
you were a leaning fence, a toppling wall?
4 They seek only to
bring me down from my place of honor; *
lies are their chief
delight.
5 They bless with their lips, *
but in their
hearts they curse.
6 For God alone my soul in silence waits;
*
truly, my hope is in him.
7 He alone is my rock and my
salvation, *
my stronghold, so that I shall not be shaken.
8
In God is my safety and my honor; *
God is my strong rock and my
refuge.
9 Put your trust in him always, O people, *
pour
out your hearts before him, for God is our refuge.
10 Those of high degree are but a fleeting breath, *
even those
of low estate cannot be trusted.
11 On the scales they are
lighter than a breath, *
all of them together.
12 Put no
trust in extortion;
in robbery take no empty pride; *
though
wealth increase, set not your heart upon it.
13 God has spoken
once, twice have I heard it, *
that power belongs to God.
14
Steadfast love is yours, O Lord, *
for you repay everyone
according to his deeds.
Glory to the
Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit
as it was in the
beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
Now at the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem they sought out the Levites in all their places, to bring them to Jerusalem to celebrate the dedication with rejoicing, with thanksgivings and with singing, with cymbals, harps, and lyres. The companies of the singers gathered together from the circuit around Jerusalem and from the villages of the Netophathites; also from Beth-gilgal and from the region of Geba and Azmaveth; for the singers had built for themselves villages around Jerusalem. And the priests and the Levites purified themselves; and they purified the people and the gates and the wall.
Then I brought the leaders of Judah up on to the wall, and appointed two great companies that gave thanks and went in procession. One went to the right on the wall to the Dung Gate; and Maaseiah, Shemaiah, Eleazar, Uzzi, Jehohanan, Malchijah, Elam, and Ezer. And the singers sang with Jezrahiah as their leader. They offered great sacrifices that day and rejoiced, for God had made them rejoice with great joy; the women and children also rejoiced. The joy of Jerusalem was heard far away.
On that day men were appointed over the chambers for the stores, the contributions, the first fruits, and the tithes, to gather into them the portions required by the law for the priests and for the Levites from the fields belonging to the towns; for Judah rejoiced over the priests and the Levites who ministered. They performed the service of their God and the service of purification, as did the singers and the gatekeepers, according to the command of David and his son Solomon. For in the days of David and Asaph long ago there was a leader of the singers, and there were songs of praise and thanksgiving to God. In the days of Zerubbabel and in the days of Nehemiah all Israel gave the daily portions for the singers and the gatekeepers. They set apart that which was for the Levites; and the Levites set apart that which was for the descendants of Aaron.
The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Glory to you,
Lord God of our fathers; *
you are worthy of praise; glory to you.
Glory to you for
the radiance of your holy Name; *
we will praise you and highly
exalt you for ever.
Glory to you in
the splendor of your temple; *
on the throne of your majesty,
glory to you.
Glory to you,
seated between the Cherubim; *
we will praise you and highly exalt
you for ever.
Glory to you,
beholding the depths; *
in the high vault of heaven, glory to you.
Glory to you,
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; *
we will praise you and highly
exalt you for ever.
Reading
Then I was given a measuring rod like a staff, and I was told, ‘Come and measure the temple of God and the altar and those who worship there, but do not measure the court outside the temple; leave that out, for it is given over to the nations, and they will trample over the holy city for forty-two months. And I will grant my two witnesses authority to prophesy for one thousand two hundred and sixty days, wearing sackcloth.’
These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth. And if anyone wants to harm them, fire pours from their mouth and consumes their foes; anyone who wants to harm them must be killed in this manner. They have authority to shut the sky, so that no rain may fall during the days of their prophesying, and they have authority over the waters to turn them into blood, and to strike the earth with every kind of plague, as often as they desire.
When they have finished their testimony, the beast that comes up from the bottomless pit will make war on them and conquer them and kill them, and their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great city that is prophetically* called Sodom and Egypt, where also their Lord was crucified. For three and a half days members of the peoples and tribes and languages and nations will gaze at their dead bodies and refuse to let them be placed in a tomb; and the inhabitants of the earth will gloat over them and celebrate and exchange presents, because these two prophets had been a torment to the inhabitants of the earth.
But after the three and a half days, the breath* of life from God entered them, and they stood on their feet, and those who saw them were terrified. Then they* heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, ‘Come up here!’ And they went up to heaven in a cloud while their enemies watched them. At that moment there was a great earthquake, and a tenth of the city fell; seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the rest were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven.
The second woe has passed. The third woe is coming very soon.
Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud
voices in heaven, saying,
‘The kingdom of the world has
become the kingdom of our Lord
and of his
Messiah,*
and
he will reign for ever and ever.’
Then the twenty-four elders who sit on their thrones before God
fell on their faces and worshipped God, singing,
‘We give
you thanks, Lord God Almighty,
who are and
who were,
for you have taken your great power
and
begun to reign.
The nations raged,
but your
wrath has come,
and the time for judging
the dead,
for rewarding your servants,*
the prophets
and saints and all who fear
your name,
both small and great,
and for
destroying those who destroy the earth.’
Then God’s temple in heaven was opened, and the ark of his covenant was seen within his temple; and there were flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, an earthquake, and heavy hail.
The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Splendor and
honor and kingly power *
are yours by right, O Lord our God,
For you created
everything that is, *
and by your will they were created and have
their being;
And yours by
right, O Lamb that was slain, *
for with your blood you have
redeemed for God,
From every
family, language, people, and nation, *
a kingdom of priests to
serve our God.
And so, to him
who sits upon the throne, *
and to Christ the Lamb,
Be worship and
praise, dominion and splendor, *
for ever and for ever more.
Glory to the
Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit
as it was in the
beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
I believe in God,
the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in
Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the
power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was
buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose
again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right
hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the
dead.
I believe in the
Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of
saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the
body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
The
Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Let us pray.
Our Father in
heaven,
hallowed be your Name,
your kingdom come,
your will
be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our
daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those
who sin
against us.
Save us from the
time of trial,
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom,
the power,
and the glory are yours,
now and for ever. Amen.
Show us your mercy, O Lord;
And grant us your salvation.
Clothe your ministers with righteousness;
Let your people sing with joy.
Give peace, O Lord, in all the world;
For only in you can we live in safety.
Lord, keep this nation under your care;
And guide us in the way of justice and truth.
Let your way be known upon earth;
Your saving health among all nations.
Let not the needy, O Lord, be forgotten;
Nor the hope of the poor be taken away.
Create in us clean hearts, O God;
And sustain us with your Holy Spirit.
Collect of the Day: Pentecost, Proper 26
Almighty and merciful God, it is only by your gift that
your
faithful people offer you true and laudable service:
Grant
that we may run without stumbling to obtain your
heavenly
promises; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives
and
reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and
for
ever. Amen.
For Mission
O God and Father of all, whom the whole heavens adore: Let the whole earth also worship you, all nations obey you, all tongues confess and bless you, and men and women everywhere love you and serve you in peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Let us pray now for our own needs and those of others.
General Thanksgiving
Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen.
Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
The grace of our
Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the
Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen.
