Year 1 Proper 27
Evening Prayer
Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; let the whole earth tremble before him. Psalm 96:9
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory to the
Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit
As it was in the
beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia.
O gracious
light,
pure brightness of the everliving Father in heaven,
O
Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!
Now as we come to the setting of
the sun,
and our eyes behold the vesper light,
we sing your
praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
You are worthy at
all times to be praised by happy voices,
O Son of God, O Giver of
Life,
and to be glorified through all the worlds.
81
1 Sing with joy to
God our strength *
and raise a loud shout to the God of Jacob.
2
Raise a song and sound the timbrel, *
the merry harp, and the
lyre.
3 Blow the ram's-horn at the new moon, *
and at the
full moon, the day of our feast.
4 For this is a statute for
Israel, *
a law of the God of Jacob.
5 He laid it as a
solemn charge upon Joseph, *
when he came out of the land of
Egypt.
6 I heard an unfamiliar voice saying, *
"I
eased his shoulder from the burden;
his hands were set free from
bearing the load."
7 You called on me in trouble, and I
saved you; *
I answered you from the secret place of thunder
and
tested you at the waters of Meribah.
8 Hear, O my people, and
I will admonish you: *
O Israel, if you would but listen to me!
9
There shall be no strange god among you; *
you shall not worship a
foreign god.
10 I am the Lord your God,
who brought you out
of the land of Egypt and said, *
"Open your mouth wide, and I
will fill it."
11 And yet my people did not hear my
voice, *
and Israel would not obey me.
12 So I gave them
over to the stubbornness of their hearts, *
to follow their own
devices.
13 Oh, that my people would listen to me!
*
that Israel would walk in my ways!
14 I should soon
subdue their enemies *
and turn my hand against their foes.
15
Those who hate the Lord would cringe before him, *
and their
punishment would last for ever.
16 But Israel would I feed
with the finest wheat *
and satisfy him with honey from the
rock.
82
1 God takes his stand in the
council of heaven; *
he gives judgment in the midst of the
gods:
2 "How long will you judge unjustly, *
and show
favor to the wicked?
3 Save the weak and the orphan; *
defend
the humble and needy;
4 Rescue the weak and the poor;
*
deliver them from the power of the wicked.
5 They do not
know, neither do they understand;
they go about in darkness; *
all
the foundations of the earth are shaken.
6 Now I say to you,
'You are gods, *
and all of you children of the Most High;
7
Nevertheless, you shall die like mortals, *
and fall like any
prince.'"
8 Arise, O God, and rule the earth, *
for you shall take all
nations for your own.
Glory to the
Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit
as it was in the
beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
Reading
After Jesus had left that place, he passed along the Sea of Galilee, and he went up the mountain, where he sat down. Great crowds came to him, bringing with them the lame, the maimed, the blind, the mute, and many others. They put them at his feet, and he cured them, so that the crowd was amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the maimed whole, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel.
Then Jesus called his disciples to him and said, ‘I have compassion for the crowd, because they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat; and I do not want to send them away hungry, for they might faint on the way.’ The disciples said to him, ‘Where are we to get enough bread in the desert to feed so great a crowd?’ Jesus asked them, ‘How many loaves have you?’ They said, ‘Seven, and a few small fish.’ Then ordering the crowd to sit down on the ground, he took the seven loaves and the fish; and after giving thanks he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And all of them ate and were filled; and they took up the broken pieces left over, seven baskets full. Those who had eaten were four thousand men, besides women and children. After sending away the crowds, he got into the boat and went to the region of Magadan.*
The Word of the
Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Canticle 15
My soul proclaims
the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my
Savior;*
for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.
From
this day all generations will call me blessed: *
the Almighty has
done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.
He has mercy on
those who fear him *
in every generation.
He has shown the
strength of his arm,*
he has scattered the proud in their
conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,*
and
has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good
things,*
and the rich he has sent away empty.
He has come to
the help of his servant Israel,*
for he has remembered his promise
of mercy,
The promise he made to our fathers,*
to Abraham and
his children for ever.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to
the Holy Spirit
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be
for ever. Amen.
I
believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I
believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord.
He was conceived
by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was
buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose
again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right
hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the
dead.
I
believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the
communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection
of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
The
Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Let us pray.
Our
Father in heaven,
hallowed be your Name,
your kingdom
come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give
us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive
those
who sin against us.
Save
us from the time of trial,
and deliver us from evil.
For
the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours,
now and for
ever. Amen.
Show us your mercy, O Lord;
And grant us your salvation.
Clothe your ministers with righteousness;
Let your people sing with joy.
Give peace, O Lord, in all the world;
For only in you can we live in safety.
Lord, keep this nation under your care;
And guide us in the way of justice and truth.
Let your way be known upon earth;
Your saving health among all nations.
Let not the needy, O Lord, be forgotten;
Nor the hope of the poor be taken away.
Create in us clean hearts, O God;
And sustain us with your Holy Spirit.
Collect of the Day: Pentecost, proper 27
O God, whose blessed Son came into the world that he might destroy the works of the devil and make us children of God and heirs of eternal life: Grant that, having this hope, we may purify ourselves as he is pure; that, when he comes again with power and great glory, we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
A Collect for Protection
Be
our light in the darkness, O Lord, and in your great mercy defend us
from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of your only
Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.
A
Collect for
those in the Armed Forces of our Country
Almighty
God, we commend to your gracious care and keeping all the men and
women of our armed forces at home and abroad. Defend them day by day
with your heavenly grace; strengthen them in their trials and
temptations; give them courage to face the perils which beset them;
and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
For Mission
O God and Father of all, whom the whole heavens adore: Let the whole earth also worship you, all nations obey you, all tongues confess and bless you, and men and women everywhere love you and serve you in peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Let us pray now for our own needs and those of others.
A Prayer of St. Chrysostom
Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen.
Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Glory
to God whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can
ask or imagine: Glory to him from generation to generation in the
Church, and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever. Amen.
