Eve of All
Saints
Tuesday
Evening Prayer
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:2
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory to the
Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit
As it was in the
beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia.
O gracious
light,
pure brightness of the everliving Father in heaven,
O
Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!
Now as we come to the setting of
the sun,
and our eyes behold the vesper light,
we sing your
praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
You are worthy at
all times to be praised by happy voices,
O Son of God, O Giver of
Life,
and to be glorified through all the worlds.
Psalms
34 Benedicam Dominum
1
I will bless the Lord at all times; *
his praise shall ever be in
my mouth.
2 I will glory in the Lord; *
let the humble hear
and rejoice.
3 Proclaim with me the greatness of the Lord;
*
let us exalt his Name together.
4 I sought the Lord, and he answered me *
and delivered me out of
all my terror.
5 Look upon him and be radiant, *
and let
not your faces be ashamed.
6 I called in my affliction and the
Lord heard me *
and saved me from all my troubles.
7 The
angel of the Lord encompasses those who fear him, *
and he will
deliver them.
8 Taste and see that the Lord is good; *
happy
are they who trust in him!
9 Fear the Lord, you that are his
saints, *
for those who fear him lack nothing.
10 The young
lions lack and suffer hunger, *
but those who seek the Lord lack
nothing that is good.
11 Come, children, and listen to me; *
I
will teach you the fear of the Lord.
12 Who among you loves
life *
and desires long life to enjoy prosperity?
13 Keep
your tongue from evil-speaking *
and your lips from lying
words.
14 Turn from evil and do good; *
seek peace and
pursue it.
15 The eyes of the Lord are upon the
righteous, *
and his ears are open to their cry.
16 The
face of the Lord is against those who do evil, *
to root out the
remembrance of them from the earth.
17 The righteous cry, and the Lord hears them *
and delivers
them from all their troubles.
18 The Lord is near to the
brokenhearted *
and will save those whose spirits are crushed.
19
Many are the troubles of the righteous, *
but the Lord will
deliver him out of them all.
20 He will keep safe all his
bones; *
not one of them shall be broken.
21 Evil shall
slay the wicked, *
and those who hate the righteous will be
punished.
22 The Lord ransoms the life of his servants, *
and
none will be punished who trust in him.
Glory to the
Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit
as it was in the
beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
Reading
But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God,
and no
torment will ever touch them.
In the eyes of the foolish they
seemed to have died,
and their departure was thought to be a
disaster,
and their going from us to be their destruction;
but
they are at peace.
For though in the sight of others they were
punished,
their hope is full of immortality.
Having been
disciplined a little, they will receive great good,
because God
tested them and found them worthy of himself;
like gold in the
furnace he tried them,
and like a sacrificial burnt-offering he
accepted them.
In the time of their visitation they will shine
forth,
and will run like sparks through the stubble.
They will
govern nations and rule over peoples,
and the Lord will reign over
them for ever.
Those who trust in him will understand truth,
and
the faithful will abide with him in love,
because grace and mercy
are upon his holy ones,
and he watches over his elect.*
The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
My
soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in
God my Savior; *
for he has looked with favor on his lowly
servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed: *
the
Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.
He
has mercy on those who fear him *
in every generation.
He has
shown the strength of his arm, *
he has scattered the proud in
their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
*
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with
good things, *
and the rich he has sent away empty.
He has come
to the help of his servant Israel, *
for he has remembered his
promise of mercy,
The promise he made to our fathers, *
to
Abraham and his children for ever.
Glory to the Father, and to
the Son, and to the Holy Spirit
as it was in the beginning, is
now, and will be for ever. Amen.
After this I heard what seemed to be the loud voice of a great
multitude in heaven, saying,
‘Hallelujah!
Salvation and
glory and power to our God,
And the twenty-four elders
and the four living creatures fell down and worshipped God who is
seated on the throne, saying,
‘Amen. Hallelujah!’
And from the throne came a voice saying,
‘Praise our
God,
all you his servants,*
and
all who fear him,
small and great.’
Then
I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the
sound of many waters and like the sound of mighty thunder-peals,
crying out,
‘Hallelujah!
For the Lord our God
the
Almighty reigns.
Let us rejoice and exult
and
give him the glory,
for the marriage of the Lamb has come,
and
his bride has made herself ready;
to her it has been granted
to be clothed
with fine linen, bright and
pure’—
for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of
the saints.
And the angel said* to me, ‘Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.’ And he said to me, ‘These are true words of God.’ Then I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, ‘You must not do that! I am a fellow-servant* with you and your comrades* who hold the testimony of Jesus.* Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus* is the spirit of prophecy.’
The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Canticle 17
Lord, you now have set your servant free *
to go in peace as
you have promised;
For these eyes of mine have seen the Savior,*
whom you have
prepared for all the world to see:
A Light to enlighten the nations,*
and the glory of your people
Israel.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit
as
it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
I
believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I
believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord.
He was conceived
by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was
buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose
again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right
hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the
dead.
I
believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the
communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection
of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
The
Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Let us pray.
Our
Father in heaven,
hallowed be your Name,
your kingdom
come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give
us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive
those
who sin against us.
Save
us from the time of trial,
and deliver us from evil.
For
the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours,
now and for
ever. Amen.
That this evening may be holy, good, and peaceful,
We entreat you, O Lord.
That your holy angels may lead us in paths of peace and goodwill,
We entreat you, O Lord.
That we may be pardoned and forgiven for our sins and offenses,
We entreat you, O Lord.
That there may be peace to your Church and to the whole world,
We entreat you, O Lord.
That
we may depart this life in your faith and fear,
and not be
condemned before the great judgment seat of Christ,
We entreat you, O Lord.
That
we may be bound together by your Holy Spirit in
the communion of
all your saints,
entrusting one another and all our life to
Christ,
We entreat you, O Lord.
Collect of the Day: Eve of All Saint's
O Almighty God, who have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship, in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those indescribable joys which you have prepared for those who truly love you: through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen
A Prayer of Self-Dedication
Almighty and eternal God, so draw our hearts to you, so guide our minds, so fill our imaginations, so control our wills, that we may be wholly yours, utterly dedicated unto you; and then use us, we pray you, as you will, and always to your glory and the welfare of your people; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.
For Mission
Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for your love's sake. Amen.
Let us pray now for our own needs and those of others.
A Prayer of St. Chrysostom
Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen.
Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
The
grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the
fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen.
